If we get time, can anyone give me some basic guidance on using a flashgun? I still can't get things right. Either way over exposed or flat as f*rt!

Rather than pointing directiy at subject (which causes harsh shadows) bounce off white ceiling or white wall. Or use something to soften light (i shoot through softbox) but cheap way through white brolly or a sheet or white paper anything that softens the light will be more appealing. Settings flash gun on half power angled down from side and above. Camera play around with f stop and shutter on 1/160 to 1/250...

EXAMPLE : one flash gun using a soft box on a stand...

F4.5 aperture
ISO 100
TTL ( 0 then +1/+2) 
Bouncing off a suspended ceiling

Not sure... have you tried switching the flash on? very dark that?

maybe drop shutter to 1/160 more power on flash and move your postition to see results.
